BV Community Partners

Hurricane Harvey caused tremendous loss to the southern Memorial Drive corridor in Houston from Highway 6 to Gessner Road and beyond. Damage to many structures was made even worse by the mandatory release of flood water into Buffalo Bayou from the Addicks and Barker Reservoirs. Thousands of families in this corridor lost virtually everything – cars, furniture, housewares, clothing, toys, kitchens, and so much more. The implements and conveniences of their everyday home, work, and school lives have been stripped away in a flood of unprecedented proportions. Most evacuated their homes with little more than the clothes on their backs and what they could hold in their hands. These losses are further exacerbated by the fact that nearly 80% of these families do not have flood insurance due to their homes not being considered in the flood plain, thus making it even harder for them to get back on their feet. These are people who have never hesitated to contribute to their community by coaching sports teams, active participation in the PTA, and supporting those in need in their neighborhoods. They now find themselves in need, not wanting to ask for help because they are the ones used to giving it, but needing help all the same.

In addition to our ongoing donations of time, furniture, and other household items, Joani Scaff, owner of Paisley House, felt compelled to help by providing a way for others who wished to either make a financial contribution or a tangible donation to those affected by Harvey. She was challenged by friends in Chicago, along with many others in her own “backyard”, to establish a 501(c)3 charitable fund to accept tax-deductible donations from those wanting to help support these families in need.

BV Community Partners’ Goal

The goal of the Bayou Volunteer (BV) Community Partners 501(c)3 charitable fund is to raise as much money possible to help ease the financial burden of rebuilding those residents affected so heavily by Harvey. All donated funds will go directly to families in need, helping with rent, building materials, and necessary items to help families in the Memorial Drive corridor get back on their feet.
